Jordan + PJ {Wedding} - Hattiesburg, MS

Happy Thursday!

Back in late October, we had the pleasure of working with the Bakery Building in Hattiesburg, MS for two weekends in a row. Right across the street from the train station, it has become one of the most popular venues for weddings in the city, and understandably so! The vintage industrial character of this building is unmatched with its original hardwood floors, metal beams on the ceiling, and exposed brick walls. According to their website: "Originally built in 1927, The Bakery Building served as a full-scale bakery for many years. Over time and through changes in ownership (and several hurricanes), the building fell into disrepair. In 2003 an ambitious project began to restore the building, expose the inherent beauty and character of the space, and repurpose it for life today."

Jordan & PJ discovered our work just one month before their wedding day and decided they had to book us! We are so excited that they did- their wedding video is such a sweet one. The letters they read to one another during their First Look were so heartfelt and authentic. Probably the most emotional part of the day was the Father-Daughter First Look. The reaction of Jordan's dad seeing her as a bride for the first time was absolutely priceless. We also loved how fun their Father/ Daughter and Mother/Son dances were at the reception. Jordan and her dad danced to "You've Got a Friend in Me" from the Disney movie, Toy Story (you can see in the video that before the dance, her dad is wearing a Woody cowboy hat.) We loved working with their families and team of vendors on this beautiful wedding day in Hattiesburg!

Hey there!

This week we are featuring one of our latest engagement sessions - perfect timing for Valentine's Day! Just as the weather was turning cooler here in Mississippi, we finally found a couple who wanted to brave a portrait session with us in a ghost town called Rodney. We've been out there exploring before but had never done any couples' portraits until now! Sydney and Steven were the perfect clients to go on this fun adventure with. They are such a sweet couple and loved seeing all of these historic buildings with us.

Rodney sits just northeast of Natchez, MS so it's pretty close to the Mississippi River. There's a few different structures and cemeteries still standing in this little ghost town, but we just stayed around three structures while we were shooting: Old Rodney Presbyterian Church, Rodney Baptist Church, and Rodney Masonic Lodge. The town is not completely deserted; there are a handful of people who still live in the area, but all of the original structures have been abandoned for a long time.

Since the last time we came to Rodney (photo at the bottom of this post), the Masonic Lodge doors have been closed off  - it was in the worst shape out of the three. The Baptist church (circa 1850) is a beautiful white building trimmed with green shutters. Both inside and out, it has so much architectural charm that we love. The Presbyterian church (circa 1829) sits just across the way and is in much better shape. As a tall brick building right off the dirt road, it's hard to miss. It's famous for receiving the brunt of a squabble during the Civil War. According to stories we've read, the pastor at that time invited Union crew members from the USS Rattler gunboat to attend his service. However, Confederates heard about this and burst into the church to arrest them, violating their Sunday truce. When fellow Union crew members found out about the Confederates breaking the truce, they retaliated by firing a cannonball at the church. The damage is still visible on the front exterior. (In the photo below, you can see it in the brick, above the green shutters on the right.)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Until next time,

RD & Ashley

Bethanie + Jairus {Wedding} - Fort Ashby, WV

In the middle of October, we had the privilege of filming for our Maryland side of the family! We traveled to Fort Ashby, WV for the beautiful wedding of our cousin Jairus, and his bride Bethanie. The elegant ceremony and fun-filled reception were both held at Brookdale Farms. We loved getting to capture all of these priceless moments for our family, and in the future, we are planning to edit a 'blooper' film together for them! On Christmas day while visiting everyone in Maryland, we were able to show this film on the big screen so nearly all of our family could watch it for the first time together. Everything about this wedding was beautiful - we really love to travel, and we hope to have more weddings up this way in 2018!

Jubilee Conference

Hope everyone is staying well and warm out there! In-between editing weddings and engagement sessions, we have been working on a short series project for a conference called Jubilee ‘18 that will be held in Jackson this weekend. The videos above are interviews with two Jackson ministry leaders, and tomorrow we’ll be filming a cinematic intro for the conference as well.

The mission of Jubilee is:

“TO UNITE CHURCHES,  NON-PROFITS,  AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO STRATEGICALLY MEET THE NEEDS OF THE POOR IN JACKSON.”

The vision for this event was conceived by our church family, Common Ground, so it is very close to our heart. We’ve been thankful to meet and work with so many great people from all around the city on this project! To learn more about Jubilee ‘18, visit their Facebook event or www.jubileejxn.org.

Logan + Ethan {Wedding} - Vicksburg, MS

One of our favorite wedding films was from October in Vicksburg, MS. Vicksburg is a quaint town with the mighty Mississippi flowing near by, and the Yazoo river feeding its strength. The wedding venue was in the historic downtown district at the BB Club. The wedding party rode in a tram car for photos up and down the steep streets near the river. The ceremony was held in a grand ballroom - it was the perfect place to say "I do" for Logan and Ethan. Their reception included a fun live band that even sang Happy Birthday to the bride's brother! One of the reasons why we love this film so much is because of the way Logan and Ethan's loved ones shared their story. Coming from their perspective, the story unfolds in such an authentic and touching way. All of the speeches were captured from their rehearsal dinner that we filmed the evening before the wedding - we hope to have more speeches that we are able to incorporate into our wedding films in the future!

We're back!

It's been a busy few months! We've had so many weddings consecutively, and can't wait to share all of our new films and photos! It's been a great time, but we are glad to have a break soon.

One of our favorite weddings was Nadia and Ismael's. This was our first wedding to be a part of that was completely Spanish-speaking, as well as our first Catholic mass ceremony. We loved getting to know their family and all of their awesome cultural traditions! One of these traditions at the reception involved the couple standing on chairs, while their friends and family held them up. Her veil was held between them both, as other wedding guests tried to knock them over. We won't give away the rest, but watch their film for the full story! With all the excitement, their wedding day flew by. It was a truly original day, and we enjoyed being a part of it. We were not able to fit in their engagement session before their wedding day, so we ended up doing their session about a week after the wedding. It turned out better than we could have planned that way because we were able to get some amazing shots of Ismael and Nadia in their wedding attire as well! For any engaged couples who don't want a 'First Look' on your wedding day, this is a great alternative so you can have a full portrait session completely unrushed by all of the wedding day festivities.

More to come soon!

Rebecca + Adam {Wedding} - Natchez, MS

One of our last summer weddings was held in the historic city of Natchez, MS, which sits just east of the Mississippi River. We were able to get some beautiful drone shots in just before the rain came, and the sun made its way back out just in time for the ceremony! The bride and groom requested that their vows not be included in their highlight video, so we knew we had to pick the perfect song to go along with this story; It's now one of our favorites! Auburn, the name of the home/museum built in 1812, featured a beautiful spiral staircase that is original to the house.

The outdoor ceremony, situated in the front yard of Auburn, began right at sunset which made for wonderful lighting. The bride, along with the flower girl and ring bearer, arrived by horse and carriage. The groom was turned around, facing away from the driveway, and anxiously waited for his bride. She was escorted up the aisle by her father, who is a local pastor and served as the officiant of the wedding. The couple exchanged vows, tied a unity knot, and exited on the carraige. The reception included great food and a fun "magic mirror" photo booth inside, as well as a dance floor outside. It was a beautiful day!

Home, where your family (and dogs) welcome you with open arms (paws), and your Gram is waiting with a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. It's always great to go home, especially when your dear friends get married! We had a wonderful time filming and photographing Katie and Seth's wedding in Cumberland, Maryland (my hometown)! The wedding day felt like a family reunion, with familiar and friendly faces all around. Of course, some great friends were there as well! The Allegany Museum was a beautiful venue for a sunny July day. There wasn't a shortage of creative energy, as the historic Western Maryland scenic railroad train station was just across the street, and the grand Appalachian mountains rose up from the terrain. Katie & Seth's wedding video was particularly unique, with original music written by the groom, making for a compelling soundtrack. We filmed them singing the duet in a staircase at the museum. The first drone shot in the film was originally shot during the couples engagement session, at Swallow Falls State Park.

We're looking forward to visiting Maryland again soon, to film another wedding! The colorful October foliage is something Mississippi usually doesn't reveal until late November, and just for a brief time. Shortly after, in November, we'll be back up for Thanksgiving, and for two photography sessions! It's been a blast coming to Maryland more often, and expanding our business as well!

P.S. Sorry we missed a week we've been busy!

Taste of West Jackson Food Competition {Ministry}

Here are two more of our restaurant spotlights filmed as promotional content for the 2nd annual Taste of West Jackson! E & L Barbeque is one of the most popular places to eat in this neighborhood and has been owned by the same family for nearly 30 years. La Reata is the only competitor in the event whose specialty is Mexican food. They are by far, in our opinion, the best place to get a burrito in Jackson. Last week we featured Famo, another competitor, on our blog - you can go back to check out the story of how he brought his dream from Chicago to Jackson. This Saturday people from all around the city will gather to sample tasty food and vote for their favorite West Jackson restaurant or caterer. Our church, Common Ground Covenant Church, is hosting this event in our neighborhood park. To us, it's not just a fun event to bring community members together; it's bigger than that. We hope that through the Taste of West Jackson, these small business owners will gain new customers and partners in the community, encourage everyone to shop local, and boost the economic growth of our community. This event is just one piece of a larger plan to help the development of West Jackson.

These event promo videos may seem completely different than our wedding videos, but we have one primary goal with everything that we shoot: to tell the story. Whether we are working with a wedding party or a business team, our mission is to authentically tell the story of each person we film. None of our films are rehearsed or forced, we capture everything as it unfolds and meticulously edit small pieces together until the story is born.

We have recently enjoyed filming and interviewing several restaurant owners for an upcoming competition hosted by our church called the Taste of West Jackson. We've been wanting to branch out into doing some videos for businesses for a while now and it's been a fun process! This particular video was made for Chi-town Salads and Sandwiches. The story behind Famo's restaurant made for an exciting editing process! We're planning on doing several more videos for the other restaurants participating in the competition. You can check out the other films we've done thus far on the Common Ground Facebook page. We can't wait to share more of our work soon!

Hope + Colton {Wedding} - Hattiesburg, MS

Hope + Colton {Wedding} - Hattiesburg, MS

On the last Saturday in June, we traveled south for Hope and Colton's wedding! The ceremony and reception were both held at Destiny Church in Hattiesburg, MS. It seemed like the entire building was filled with beautiful, personal decorations and details that really helped us tell the story of this sweet couple. From the touching photos of loved ones whom had passed away attached to the bride's bouquet, to the impressive SR-71 Titanium- a rare artifact from the Cold War- at the groom's table, everything was so unique and personal to the bride and groom. They also shared heartfelt letters to one another following the ceremony. Hearing the bride's account of how they fell in love at a hospital where they both work was priceless! Hope also gave us a big compliment about our work that we really appreciated. After finding us online and watching a few of our videos, she told Colton she wanted to go ahead and book us. Since we were the only videographers they had looked into so far, he suggested searching for a few more just to have more options to choose from. But Hope said she already knew she wanted us to film their wedding! She said she loved how we accentuate all of the special touches that make a wedding personal. We really enjoyed filming this special wedding, and we will be back to film and photograph another Hattiesburg wedding in October!

Solar Eclipse 2017

Solar Eclipse 2017

On Monday we had a blast shooting the solar eclipse during our lunch break from our front yard in Crystal Springs! For the last few weeks, we went back and forth about the idea of traveling into the path of totality to capture the eclipse in totality, but we chickened out...next time (2023 to be exact, full eclipse in 2024 just a stones throw away to totality in Arkansas). It was truly beautiful from our own home as well! We shot the eclipse on a Canon C-100 with a polarizing filter, on ND 6, F45, and a 100-300mm Canon telescopic lens and viewed it with our bare eyeballs...not really.. A lot of photography jargon, but basically we could have benefitted from a few more stops of ND (neutral density) to further darken the image, however it turned out better than expected.  I find particular interest in celestial events so this was certainly a day to be remembered. We plan to film/photograph some different time lapses soon, so keep an eye out (a protected eye)! Until next time, keep those eyes from the scorching of the sun, and stay safe.

Common Ground Enterprises {Ministry} - Jackson, MS

Our church home, Common Ground Covenant Church, is located in west Jackson, Mississippi. We have recently been given the opportunity to create content and films for the media outreach ministry. We're excited to see where God leads us with this endeavor and to hopefully reach the city of Jackson and surrounding communities. One of our latest films began as an application video for an emerging leader grant with Wheat Ridge Ministries, but it recently gained attention on social media from community developers and church planters around the country with over 2.5 thousand views as of today.

The film primarily focuses on one of our newest ministries: Common Ground Enterprises. Through creating workforce development opportunities, we are working towards sustainable solutions to reduce poverty in our community. Watch the full film to learn more about each of our enterprises. We are excited to be a part of Common Ground and the work the Lord is doing in the community.

Here are some ways you can be involved in this ministry:

  • Pray for us - both personally and through your church.
  • If you are local to the Jackson area, contact us for more information on how you can hire Common Ground catering for your next event or wedding!
  • Support Common Ground through a one-time donation or monthly donation here: http://commongroundjxn.org/general-giving/ (any amount is greatly appreciated!)
  • Visit our church service to see for yourself how God is working! We meet at 531 W. Capitol St. in Jackson, MS on Sundays at 10:37 a.m. (after Luke 10:37).

We'll continue to update the blog with our CGCC media!

Taylor + Chance {Wedding} - Brookhaven, MS

We were so excited to be the videographers for Taylor and Chance's big day! The preparations, first look, and ceremony were held at Johnson Grove Church of Christ in the Brookhaven, MS / Bogue Chitto, MS area. Our drone captured stunning aerial shots of the country church. Taylor & Chance had an emotional first look in the sanctuary, and then posed for their sweet portraits by their photographer Kelly Nevels. If you haven't heard of a 'first look,' this is a special time set aside for the bride and groom to see each other for the first time in their wedding attire before the ceremony. This allows more time for intimate shots of the couple for the photographer and videographer. Another benefit that some couples like about this option is that they are able to go straight from the ceremony to the reception and spend more time with their guests since all of the family portraits and formal photos are finished ahead of time. We really enjoy shooting traditional reveals as well, but first looks are definitely worth considering if you are planning a wedding!

By 5 p.m., every pew was filled. The bridal party made their way down from the balcony to line up and walk up the aisle. Taylor was escorted by her father to the front of the sanctuary where her groom was anxiously waiting. After their vows were sealed with a kiss, everyone joined the happy couple in Wesson, MS for the reception at the Old Wesson School, and a fun night of eating and dancing!

Kelcey + Austin {Wedding} - Grenada, MS

We had a great time filming and photographing this special wedding in Grenada, Mississippi! The day started off with a cloudless drive up from Jackson, with striking blue skies. As we arrived in downtown Grenada, we encountered a stately brick building marked "First & Green," the wedding venue. The day went smoothly, and Kelsey and Austin were a wonderful couple to work with.  Despite a bout of rain before the ceremony, the excitement continued to grow! The bride and groom wrote compelling letters to one another, which they read for us for the highlight film. After the ceremony was over, everyone put on their dancing shoes and enjoyed live music by Style the Band. It was a great time! Shortly thereafter, the rain clouds parted and gave way for the couple to make their departure under a beautiful sunset with a dark orange tint. We hope to be back to Grenada one day soon!

Amanda + Matthew {Wedding} - Crystal Springs, MS

Tucked away in the woods of Crystal Springs, Mississippi down a few winding back roads lies the Jackson Place. This beautiful barn was the location of an exciting wedding celebration. We had the pleasure of being the photographers and the videographers of Amanda & Matthew's celebration. Ash and I have traveled this summer to Jackson, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, Bogue Chitto, Grenada, Cumberland, Maryland, and beyond!!! Although we traveled to some of these locations after this wedding, it was nice to have a venue so close to home! Our dogs (Moses & Eydie) appreciated it as well.  It was a windy day so flying the drone was more difficult than usual. Thankfully, the wind receded once the ceremony began. I have yet to fly the drone during a ceremony, but it's sure to happen one day. We worked with some great vendors for this wedding, including: Sherry's Catering and Ricky McCraw mobile DJ. Venue: Jackson Place.

As I've lived here in Crystal Springs for about two and a half years, it's been exciting getting to understand the area better. We plan to do a film on Crystal Springs at some point in the future (top secret for now). Everyday is a new adventure with Pioneer Productions. We've thoroughly enjoyed building our business as the future slowly irons itself out. We have big plans for the future, and God-willing those will come to fruition.

Welcome to our new site design!! Still playing catch up on our blog...if you follow us on Instagram (@pioneerproductionsms), you have seen a glimpse of this gorgeous engagement session. We were so excited to finally get to shoot in RD's home state of Maryland! We started out walking through the trails at Swallow Falls State Park and ended lakeside at Herrington Manor State Park. This was our first session to use our new DRONE! (You'll be able to see some of our recent drone footage in our latest wedding films). The entire afternoon ended up being the best adventure - we explored, laughed until we cried, got some amazing shots with the drone, and saw a black bear in the woods. Katie and Seth were such good sports braving the waterfall! We will be back in Maryland in just a couple of weeks to shoot these sweet friends' wedding so stay tuned! - Ash
